OUR JUVENILE DELINQUENCY PRACTICE
When your child is charged with a crime, you need an experienced juvenile defense attorney. We have represented hundreds of juveniles charged with all types of crimes throughout San Bernardino and Riverside counties. The reason you need an experienced juvenile defense attorney is because juvenile court is very different than adult criminal court. Knowing the differences between the two is critical.
Our juvenile delinquency attorneys are familiar with the rules, procedures, language and players in the juvenile court system. And unfortunately, we are also aware that in this day and age, the consequences of a juvenile court adjudication (conviction) can be quite serious.
Among the most serious consequences are:
Being transferred to adult court to be prosecuted as an adult through what is called a “fitness hearing”;
Having “strikes” on a juvenile’s record (only if your child committed certain types of serious crimes when s/he was age 16 or older);
*Serving time in juvenile hall, being sent to an out-of-home placement, or serving a commitment at the Division of Juvenile Justice;
*Sex Offender or Gang Member registration;
and *Loss of driving privileges.
At Connally & Gardner, our juvenile delinquency attorneys are aware of and can advise you and your child about these consequences. We can discuss creative solutions to help protect your child’s record. And in the right cases, we might be able to get our clients enrolled in programs that result in a dismissal of the case at the end of a probationary period. The probationary periods vary in length (six months to one year), and have different requirements. We can discuss your child’s eligibility for those programs and ways you can help increase your child’s chances of getting these rehabilitative programs.
Aside from juvenile delinquency court, your child may have received a citation to appear at what is referred to as Juvenile Traffic Court. This Court was created to handle less serious offenses. A Juvenile Court Hearing Officer presides over these cases and will act as a prosecutor and judge if your child elects to have a trial at the Traffic Court. Punishments for cases in Traffic Court generally include a fine, community service, and some type of a suspension of your child’s driving license. Because of the possibility of losing driving privileges, families have hired our juvenile defense attorneys to successfully represent their children in Traffic Court.
